This is a follow up on the first post where i listed some tips to become more sustainable in the kitchen, if you haven't seen yet, it go check it out.
so you have you have took on board the first lot of tips i gave you now you want to learn a little more, so lets dive a little deeper.
Tip 1: say no to plastic
i touched on this in the first post but it isn't just about shops packing fruit and veggies in single use plastics, its also in how we store things, here is how you can replace single use plastics.
when it comes to wrapping food there are many ways to do it the best way is to swap cling film and plastic ziplock bags with reusable silicon ziplock bags and containers, they arent just for packing lunches, they fair well in the freezer too.
also if you save jam/sauce jars you can reuse them to store anything you want.
Tip 2: learn old school skills
we seem to have lost certain arts in the modern world, and have become such a wasteful generation, what I'm trying to say is learn how to store food the old way, either through canning, dehydrating or fermenting.
Tip 3: compost or regrow scraps
most things are are compostable, yes most places have a food waste bin but there's something more beneficial doing your own, free compost to start with, you can control how healthier the soil is and aids in biodiversity.
did you know root vegetables can be regrown by putting the roots in some water until established then transfer them to soil, you can also save seeds from things like tomatoes and cucumbers to be planted and grown which leads me to my next tip.
Tip 4: Grow your own
there is something so good about growing your own produce, there's no chemicals, its on your doorstep and you aren't relying on anyone else to provide food, there is also a sense of achievement when you have grown your own, this is another reason to learn how to can and dehydrate.
there is still more to know about zero waste kitchens so look out for my next post on this topic.
