here are some tips to begin a more sustainable lifestyle when it comes to your kitchen, the way forward is to go zero waste or to at least get the amount you waste as low as possible.

one of the biggest issues when it to the climate crisis is the amount of food that gets wasted, tonnes and tonnes out it goes to landfill, which is sad on so many levels to think there are people out there starving and others waste food and money because we buy too much or don't understand best before and use by dates.

Tip 1: meal plan

one of the best things you can do is meal plan and to stick to it, meal planning makes everything easier, you don't have to think about what to have for tea everyday because you already planned it and less likely to eat crap food, but the most important thing is that you will buy less because you only need to but what you planned for, i will say there is a strategic way of meal planning which i will talk about another time, but just get into the meal planning habit.

Tip 2: Meal prep

this also makes life a little easier too, if you spend an hour prepping for the whole week, you spend less time trying to cook during the week, so more time for yourself and you would use spend less on energy because you wont be cooking for as long everyday. also you can see what is leftover that you can use up for the next week.

Tip 3: Buy loose fruit, veg and meat

packaging is a pet peeve of mine, just stop buying fruit and veg in plastic packaging, one plastic is an environmental demon, two you have no choice but to buy a full bag of something when you only need say for example one apple the others will get wasted, and three fruit and veg have survived in nature and have their own protection.. their skin! just give them a wash.

Tip 4: Shop local

go to the market and your local butchers, not only are you helping local businesses, you are reducing the carbon footprint of the food, most of our food in the UK is imported, as a country we have become reliant on others to feed us, we a more than capable of raising pigs and chickens yet we import bacon from Denmark and chicken from Amsterdam. don't forget to take your own bags!

look out for the second part to a zero waste kitchen where i share more tips on making your kitchen more sustainable.
